What a compounded stack is

In telehealth and compounding, a "stack" is an informal term for a plan that brings more than one active ingredient together. Instead of a single molecule, a stack pairs two or more prescription actives that a licensed pharmacy prepares in response to an individual prescription. Some stacks are a single compounded preparation that contains more than one active; others are a set of separate items packaged and managed as one protocol.

Why more than one active is combined

Most medications are designed around a single target — an enzyme, a receptor, or a transport step. A molecule that binds one receptor generally does little at an unrelated one. That specificity is useful, but it also means a single active engages a single pathway.

A stack is built on a straightforward idea: different molecules act on different pathways. When a plan is meant to touch more than one biological process, combining actives that each engage a separate mechanism lets those processes be addressed within one plan rather than through a single molecule.
